Oh dear, wisdom teeth! Many people could tell you a thing or two about them. Yet experiences vary widely, and on top of that there are a number of myths about the ‘eights’, as orthodontists like to call them.

What are wisdom teeth?

Counting from the centre, the wisdom tooth is the eighth tooth in the human dentition. That is why it is often called the ‘8’.

Normally, every person has 2 wisdom teeth in the upper jaw and 2 in the lower jaw. So everyone should have four wisdom teeth, and the human dentition is said to have 32 teeth. Wisdom teeth often erupt relatively late.

Do wisdom teeth make your teeth shift?

It is possible that teeth shift because of the wisdom teeth, but this cannot be said with certainty. In any case, it should be assessed individually by an orthodontist.

Teeth shifted after wisdom tooth surgery?

Following wisdom tooth surgery, the teeth (especially the back teeth) may shift because of bone remodelling.
