1. The initial consultation: individual advice and diagnosis
The first step towards your new smile is a free initial consultation with us at the Eltz Institut. Here our experienced orthodontists take the time to understand your concerns and to make a comprehensive diagnosis of the position of your teeth.
What happens at the initial consultation?
- Examination of the teeth and jaw: We check whether there are any misalignments, which ones, and which braces are suitable for you.
- Discussion of your wishes: We talk about your aesthetic and functional goals and develop an individual treatment plan.
- X-rays and 3D scans: Photos, a digital 3D scan and X-rays are then taken in order to analyse the structure of your teeth and jaw in more detail.
2. Drawing up your individual treatment plan
After the comprehensive diagnosis, we draw up a tailor-made treatment plan that is precisely matched to your misalignment. This plan determines which type of braces (e.g. self-ligating brackets, clear brackets or lingual braces) is best suited to you and how long the treatment is likely to take.
Your personal treatment plan includes:
- Type of braces: We choose the right solution for you – be it a discreet tooth-coloured or transparent bracket option or invisible braces fitted on the inside of the teeth (lingual braces).
- Treatment time: The exact length of treatment depends on the complexity of the misalignment, but is usually between 12 and 24 months.
- Costs and financing: We give you transparent information about the costs and offer flexible instalment plans to make the treatment affordable.
3. Fitting the fixed braces
Once the treatment plan has been finalised, the braces are fitted. This appointment is carried out by our experienced orthodontists and usually takes about an hour. The brackets are carefully attached to the teeth and the archwires are inserted.
What happens when the braces are fitted?
- Attaching the brackets: The brackets are bonded directly to the teeth with a special adhesive.
- Inserting the archwire: The archwire is guided through the brackets to move the teeth gently and continuously into the desired position.
- Care instructions: We show you how to care for your teeth and your braces properly during treatment in order to ensure optimal oral hygiene.
4. Regular check-up appointments
To make sure that the braces are working optimally and the teeth are moving as planned, regular check-up appointments are necessary. These usually take place approximately every 8 weeks and last about 20 minutes.
What happens at the check-up appointments?
- Adjusting the archwires: The archwires are adjusted or replaced as needed in order to optimise the progress of treatment.
- Checking treatment progress: We check whether the teeth are moving as planned and adjust the treatment plan if necessary.
- Advice and support: You receive tips on caring for your teeth and your braces in order to avoid possible problems such as tooth decay or gum inflammation.
5. Completing treatment: removing the braces
As soon as the desired result has been achieved and your teeth are in the right position, the braces are removed. This step is painless and takes about 45 minutes. After removal, the final position of the teeth is checked carefully once again.
What happens when the braces are removed?
- Removing the brackets: The brackets and archwires are carefully removed without damaging the teeth.
- Cleaning and polishing: After the braces have been removed, the teeth are thoroughly cleaned and polished to remove any adhesive residue.
- Making the retainer: To stabilise the result in the long term, a retainer is made that holds the teeth in their new position.
6. Retention: long-term stability for your smile
After the braces have been removed, it is important to stabilise the teeth in their new position. A retainer is used for this, which prevents the teeth from drifting back to their old position.
What retention methods are there?
- Fixed retainer: A thin wire is permanently attached to the inside of the front teeth to hold the teeth in their new position.
- Removable retainer: A removable plastic tray that is worn at night to stabilise the teeth.
