A New York smile with our invisible braces for adults in Vienna
When people think of braces, many immediately have a certain picture in mind: large wire contraptions on the teeth, pain, difficulty speaking clearly, several years of treatment, awkward looks from strangers, etc.

To change this picture, doctors at New York University (with the involvement of Dr. Eltz) developed their own mechanics and technique for orthodontic treatment.
The aim of the method was to tailor orthodontic treatment to the needs of the people of New York – lawyers, bankers, consultants and marketing specialists as well as NYU students or single mothers: perfect results, short treatment times, pain-free treatment, stable results after the braces come off, and accommodating patients’ private and professional circumstances through long intervals between appointments, punctuality and much more.
We brought this method with us to Austria and, in recent years, have developed it further by adding a factor that is essential for patients: invisibility.
We call our method the New York technique.
Dr. Eltz explains
Why does our philosophy originate in New York? How do our patients benefit from it?
Features
The advantages of our New York technique are astonishing:
- Almost invisible
- No restrictions on speaking, work or sport
- Shorter treatment time
- Better hygiene
- No pain
- Fewer, shorter visits to the doctor
Almost invisible braces
For many patients, it is important that their treatment is as invisible as possible. With our new New York technique, we ensure this in three ways:
- Almost two thirds of our patients are treated exclusively with Invisalign® – in other words, with invisible aligners.
- Even severe misalignments can be corrected almost invisibly by combining Invisalign® with partial bonding of self-ligating brackets on the back teeth only.
- In some cases, we can at least reduce the wearing time of clear brackets – which are almost invisible anyway – to a few months. We achieve this by covering certain phases of the orthodontic treatment with a combination of Invisalign® and Osamu retainers.
You can find out which invisible methods are available here.
No speech impairments
Traditional orthodontics still often uses techniques that severely restrict speech. Examples include bothersome inner archwires.
Because it uses state-of-the-art aligner technologies such as Invisalign or self-ligating brackets with robot-bent wires, and therefore gentle but highly effective forces, the New York technique does without these elaborate anchorage devices.
For this reason, speech problems are not an issue with the New York technique.
Shorter treatment time
Most patients (rightly) want the best possible result with braces worn for as short a time as possible. With most orthodontic methods, however, treatment takes two to three years.
With the New York technique, treatment at the Eltz Institut takes 12.7 months on average.
Short treatment time
How do our patients feel about the length of treatment? What were their expectations?
Better hygiene
Excellent oral hygiene is an essential prerequisite for excellent orthodontic treatment. Poor oral hygiene can lead to inflammation of the gums, the build-up of plaque and other unpleasant consequences. As a result, the orthodontic treatment takes longer and, in extreme cases, may even have to be stopped.

That is why impeccable oral hygiene in our patients is very important to us. This is how we put it into practice:
Wherever possible, we use state-of-the-art aligner technologies that make it easy for patients to clean their teeth.
At the start of treatment, we give our patients special care products that we have collected from all over the world.
We provide thorough instruction at the start of treatment.
In addition, our self-ligating brackets are considerably smaller than conventional ones, so the surfaces on which bacteria can settle are also considerably smaller. When brushing your teeth, you can clean between the brackets more easily than with conventional braces, and your oral hygiene is less restricted.
No pain
Anyone who had braces years ago, or knew people with braces, knows that orthodontic treatment can be painful.
But it is precisely people in demanding phases of life, who have to concentrate on their work or want to get things done, who cannot afford pain during orthodontic treatment – whether at work, in the household, while raising children, at school/university or when organising their own wedding.
The core aim of the New York method is to make pain-free orthodontic treatment possible. This is ensured by using state-of-the-art aligner technologies or, with brackets, gentle forces and thinner steel archwires.
The result surprises even us: in our latest patient survey, 91% of all patients said that they find orthodontic treatment with us pleasant most of the time or always!!!
Fewer visits to the doctor and fewer appointments
Anyone who is busy at work and/or in their private life wants to go to the doctor only rarely and stay there no longer than necessary.
Our unique New York technique, which uses state-of-the-art aligner therapies or robot-bent wires and special bonding techniques, makes much shorter appointments and considerably longer intervals possible.
Two examples illustrate the advantages:
- In the past, bonding appointments often took three to four hours. With the New York technique, they usually take max. 45 minutes.
- Patients used to have to come in every 14 days, for example to have their elastics changed. Today, intervals of 8-10 weeks between appointments are the norm.
So if you like your visits to the doctor to be rare and short, you will love our method.
Time management
Most of our patients are in work. Time is an important factor for them. How did they fit orthodontic treatment into their schedules?
Next step: retention
Once we have moved your teeth into the desired position, the final phase of your treatment follows: retention. Here you can find out why it is so important and what retention options there are. Read more
