Frequently asked questions about braces for children
Everything parents need to know about braces for children
When your child needs braces, many questions often come up – from the treatment options and the right timing to caring for the brace. At the Eltz Institut, we answer the most common questions about braces for children and help you make the right decision for your child’s health.

1. When should my child get braces?
There is no fixed time that applies to all children, but as a rule we recommend that children see an orthodontist for the first time between the ages of 6 and 8. This is when the permanent teeth start to come through, and we can determine early on whether braces will be needed.
2. What types of braces are there for children?
At the Eltz Institut, we offer various treatment methods that are tailored to each child’s individual needs. The most common options are:
- Fixed braces: These consist of brackets and wires and are ideal for correcting complex misalignments.
- Removable braces: These are mainly used to guide jaw growth or to correct mild misalignments.
- Invisible braces (aligners): For both children and teenagers, we also offer clear aligners, which are a discreet and flexible treatment option.
3. How long will my child have to wear braces?
The length of treatment depends on the type of misalignment and the treatment method chosen. As a rule, orthodontic treatment takes between 12 and 24 months. In very complex cases, treatment can also take longer.

4. Will braces hurt?
In the first few days after braces are fitted or adjusted, your child may feel slight pressure or discomfort. This is completely normal and usually passes after a few days. However, modern braces, such as the self-ligating brackets or clear aligners we use at the Eltz Institut, are designed to make treatment as comfortable as possible. If your child complains of persistent pain, we can make adjustments at any time.
5. How often does my child need check-ups?
Check-ups usually take place approximately every 8–10 weeks. At these appointments, our specialised orthodontists check the progress of treatment and make adjustments if necessary. These appointments are important to make sure that treatment progresses optimally. That is why it is extremely important to attend appointments on time.

6. Can my child eat everything with braces?
During treatment with fixed braces, certain foods should be avoided to prevent damage to the braces. These include:
- Sticky foods such as chewing gum or toffees
- Hard foods such as nuts or hard sweets
- Tough foods such as steak or tough bread crusts
Removable braces and aligners have the advantage that they can be taken out while eating, so there are no restrictions here.
7. How do you care for teeth with braces?
Good oral hygiene is particularly important during orthodontic treatment to prevent tooth decay and gum inflammation. We recommend:
- Brushing regularly after every meal with a special toothbrush for braces
- Dental floss or interdental brushes to keep the spaces between the teeth clean
- Fluoride toothpaste to strengthen the tooth enamel
At the Eltz Institut, we give you and your child tips on optimal dental care during treatment at every appointment.
8. How much do braces for my child cost?
The cost of braces depends on the type of treatment and the misalignment. For children with severe misalignments (grades 4 & 5 on the IOTN, the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need), free braces are available in Austria, fully covered by the public health insurance fund. For other cases, we offer flexible instalment plans at the Eltz Institut to make treatment affordable for every family.
9. What happens after treatment with braces?
After active treatment with braces, the so-called retention phase begins. During this time, the teeth are held in their new position with a retainer to make sure that they do not shift again. There are removable retainers or fixed
retainer wires that are attached to the inside of the teeth.

10. What happens if the brace breaks?
If your child’s brace is damaged, it is important that you contact us as quickly as possible. We will then arrange an appointment to repair the brace so that the course of treatment is not interrupted.
