Frequently asked questions about the initial examination for orthodontic treatment in children: what parents should know
The initial examination at the Eltz Institut: the first step towards a healthy smile
The first examination by an orthodontist is an important step in ensuring your child's dental health. It is understandable that parents and children have many questions before this appointment. At the Eltz Institut, we want to give you all the important information so that you and your child arrive well prepared for the initial examination and know what to expect.

Frequently asked questions about the initial examination
To make the initial examination easier for you and your child, we have put together the questions that parents ask most often before the first appointment.
1. At what age should the first examination take place?
We recommend starting the first orthodontic check-ups from as early as the age of 6. This is when the mixed dentition begins, meaning that the permanent teeth gradually come through. This is the ideal time to detect possible misalignments early and, if necessary, to start treatment.
2. What happens at the first examination?
The initial examination usually takes 30–40 minutes. Our specialised orthodontists take the time to examine your child's teeth and jaw closely. You can expect the following steps:
- Medical history: we discuss your child's dental history, any complaints or abnormalities, and questions about dental care and hygiene.
- Examination of the teeth: our specialist orthodontists take a close look at the teeth, gums and jaw to identify any misalignments or developmental disorders.
- •3D scan and X-rays: if needed, we take a 3D scan and X-rays to obtain a precise picture of the structure of the teeth and jaw.
- Consultation and treatment plan: after the examination, we explain the findings to you and discuss possible treatment methods tailored individually to your child's needs.
3. Will my child get braces straight away?
In most cases, the initial examination first establishes a diagnosis, and a treatment plan is drawn up. Braces are not always needed immediately, especially if your child still has baby teeth. We decide together when the right time for treatment has come.

4. How is the course of treatment determined?
After the initial examination, we draw up an individual treatment plan that describes exactly how the misalignment will be corrected. We explain the course of treatment, the expected duration, the costs and which braces or aligners are best suited to your child.
5. How do we prepare for the initial examination?
You do not need to make any special preparations. It is helpful if you bring all relevant medical records or previous examination results if your child has already been treated by a dentist or orthodontist. If you have a recent X-ray, please bring it with you. Make sure that your child brushes their teeth well before the appointment so that we have a clear view of the teeth.
6. What does the initial examination cost?
At the Eltz Institut, the initial examination for free braces (covered by Austrian public health insurance) is free of charge; for invisible braces for children, the consultation is credited towards treatment if you go ahead with it.
7. How long does treatment take?
The duration of treatment depends on the type of misalignment and the chosen treatment approach. As a rule, orthodontic treatment takes between 12 and 24 months, and longer in complex cases. We discuss the exact duration when we draw up the treatment plan.
What happens after the initial examination?
After the initial examination, we draw up a comprehensive treatment plan, which we discuss with you. We go into every detail, from the choice of braces to the financing of the treatment. It is important to us that all your questions are answered and that you feel confident.
