Are your teeth shifting?
When beautiful teeth are framed by a smile, the whole world melts with delight. All the worse, then, is the news that teeth can shift throughout your life – some more, others less. We know exactly what to do!

Why do teeth shift?
Teeth can shift for a variety of reasons. Our teeth and the way they are positioned are just as individual as we are. Teeth move throughout our lives, just as our hair grows. Possible causes include, for example, putting the wrong kind of load on our teeth or having a bad habit such as chewing on a ballpoint pen! But there may also be a tongue dysfunction or a muscular disorder. Some of us have gaps between our teeth, and these also give the remaining teeth plenty of room to drift.
In patients who have already completed orthodontic treatment and do not wear their retainer, the teeth may shift because they want to return to their original position.
Which teeth shift?
In principle, any tooth can shift if it is loaded incorrectly. Most often, however, it is the front teeth that shift. This is also why many patients no longer find their smile attractive or avoid looking in the mirror every day.

At what age do teeth shift?
Teeth can shift throughout your life. This has nothing at all to do with age.

How can I tell whether my teeth are shifting?
The quickest proof is usually to look at your own teeth in photos. You will generally notice fairly quickly whether your teeth have shifted, and over what period. We all have plenty of selfies on our smartphones, so it is easy to compare them with older photos.
Some people also notice by themselves that their bite has changed or feels different. If in doubt, you can also ask your regular dentist. Your own dentist looks after you over many years and can therefore tell you whether or not your teeth have shifted.

What if teeth suddenly shift?
Shifted teeth affect both how the teeth function and how they look. The longer you wait to have orthodontic treatment, the more complex and lengthy the treatment will be. Minor misalignments can often be corrected in just a few months – this stops the misalignment from getting worse, and you quickly get the dream smile you want.

Teeth shifting after an accident
After an accident or a fall onto the face, especially in the area of the mouth and chin, you should always have your regular dentist provide initial treatment quickly. If teeth have shifted, you should consult an orthodontist as a 2nd step. After an accident, there are often only minor misalignments, which can be corrected relatively quickly. We will be happy to help you bring your teeth back into the perfect position.
